The kids go back to the start

First, it was the children of the earth.

The indegenious brothers.

They prayed to the sun that walked,

Sang to the river that ran,

Touched the trees that stood still,

And said ‘thank you for today, mother.’

Then came their kids’ kids’ kids.

Who called them old-fashioned,

Left the forests to build shiny glass temples,

and said hello only if you called them on their flip phones.

Then came their kids’ kids, who were born with electronic spoons.

They were too smart, too unpoetic,

Too hard-hearted, and

A little too much for this soft skinned earth.

Then one day, came the Big Thing.

The thing that everyone said could come,

but no one believed would come —- so soon.

The earth was freezing, and on fire, while it drowned - as if that were possible.

And it was.

The kids went on their knees and raised their electronic spoons

But they were of no use.

They all went inside the bunkers they thought they will never use.

The river froze,

The dust blew in,

The sun walked away.

Looked like, for a while, it will be this way.

The kids lay in the bunkers for years and weeks and days

When finally one of them said ‘I can’t live like this anymore’ in rage

Dhapp, dhapp, dhapp.

He kicked the door of the bunker open.

And it filled it with an intense light.

A light so bright that one kid asked ‘Is that the sky?

Or did we just..die?’

And it sure was the sky!

The dust had cleared and the sun walked again.

The rivers thawed, and it limped a little,

but it was picking up a pace.

And far away,

really really quite honestly very far away

The kids saw a tree.

A tree that somehow, still stood still.

They went and touched it, and cried a little.

The kids buried their electronic spoons.

And said a little prayer to the sun,

Then wrote a song for the river,

Then they all stood around the tree, touched it,

And said

‘thank you for today, mother.’
