Robert Gosset Woodthorpe’s sketches from Nagaland.

From his personal journal between 1871-1877

Robert was a British officer and self-taught artist, received his commission in the Royal Engineers in 1865 and was posted to India early in his career. He started his survey work as an Assistant Superintendent in 1871-72, initially in the Lushai Hills, followed by assignments in the Garo and Naga Hills. The Lushai Expedition in itself, was a complex and elaborate chapter in our history. But that’s for another day. Today, we wanted to dedicate this space here to remind us of some faces from our past - Nagaland through the eyes of Robert Gosset Woodthorpe.

We found these pages from his journal archived in The British Museum.
